Endometriosis

About Endometriosis
Endometriosis is one of the most common gynecological disorders, affecting over one million women in the United States. It occurs when endometrial tissue, the tissue that lines the uterus, grows outside of the uterus and attaches to other organs in the abdominal cavity such as the ovaries and fallopian tubes. The endometrial tissue outside the uterus similarly responds to the hormones of menstrual cycle with regular growth and bleeding, causing symptoms including painful menstrual periods, abnormal menstrual bleeding, pain during or after sexual intercourse, and infertility. It is a progressive disease that tends to get worse over time and can reoccur after treatment.

The cause of endometriosis is still unknown, but there are several unproven theories. The retrograde menstruation theory suggests that the menstrual tissue backs up during menstruation through the fallopian tubes into the abdomen where it implants and grows. The genetic predisposition theory claims that that it is a genetic birth abnormality in which endometrial cells develop outside the uterus during fetal development.

For diagnosis, a laparoscopy is necessary to confirm a diagnosis of endometriosis after a medical history review and pelvic exam. Current treatment for endometriosis includes medications and/or surgery to relieve pain and cure infertility. Surgical removal of the endometrial growths is performed under laparoscope. Hormone treatment uses gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist (GnRHa), estrogen and progesterone combination in the form of the oral contraceptive pill. The side effects include bone density loss (osteoporosis), irregular vaginal bleeding, hot flash and weight gain.
